Keen Sandals, Shoes & Boots for Everyday Adventures & Outdoor Sports

Design that was inspired to solve a problem, the need for shoe that combined the best sneaker and sandal features, KEEN was born out of necessity. Founder Martin Keen grew tired of stubbing his toe while working on his sailboat, so he set out to redesign the outdoor sandal. In doing so he revolutionized the outdoor shoe market. His early designs, used real people's foot shapes and focused on function, instead of fashion. He widened the toe box, allowing more room and comfort, enclosed the front of the shoe in rubber to protect the toes, and added an aggressive rubber sole to the bottom. He kept it light and breathable with the sandal straps on the top and added bungee laces that allowed for quick and easy on and off. This new shoe would be a true hybrid offering both the protection and versatility of a sneaker and the breath-ability and water resistance of a sandal. By 2003 Martin Keen, and his partner, Rory Fuerst, were finally ready to release their first shoe. The KEEN Newport water shoe was a big hit.

The unique look of KEEN sandals stood out then (and still do today) for the protection they offer from the elements in their rubber closed toe cap, non slip rubber sole, and adjustable straps. Another well-know feature of KEEN sandals and boots is that they require NO break-in period, they are immediately comfortable because the KEEN footbed contour keeps your foot in place. The KEEN mid-sole and out-sole are designed to design create an amazing base for stability, a perfect balance between being both firm and giving at the same time.

Although they started with just the one outdoor shoe/sandal hybrid, they have expanded their line to include hiking shoes, boots, open toe outdoor sandals, durable work boots, and men's, women's, and children's shoes. At OutlandUSA.com we love KEEN and own many pairs ourselves.  We choose to wear KEEN because it's hard to beat their style, durability, breath-ability, and comfortable fit. Some of our favorites are the Men's Targhee II, Women's Newport H2, and Women's Terradora Boot. If you have questions about sizing, see our FAQ's and sizing chart below.

How Steve Jobs and Apple got KEEN off on the Right Foot!

This is the story of how Martin Keen had chance meeting with Steve Jobs that resulted in Apple Computers helping to get KEEN off on the right foot, told through the eyes of a 9 year old boy and his Lego toys.

 Questions & Tips

Q: I want to wear my KEEN both on land and in the water, which pair should I choose?

KEEN has quite a few waterproof and quick drying boots and sandals.

The Newport Sandals and the Newport H2s have a squishy, soft neoprene upper ( straps). Those straps helps dispense the shoe's pressure and are very quick drying. The open sides allow water to flow in and out, while the stable rubber sole allows for longer day hiking. Other quick drying sandals are the Venice, Whisper, Clearwater CNX, Uneek, and Bali Strap Sandals.

The KEEN water resistant boots are some of our favorites at OutlandUSA.com, including their newest women's outdoor boot, the Terradora. The new KEEN.Dry waterproof breathable membrane has shown to really keep the wearers feet dry even when walking through 3-5 inches of water. Other water resistant boots include the Targhee II, Oakridge, Durand, Gypsum II, and the new Men's Aphlex.

Q: Do KEEN footwear accommodate narrow feet?

Yes. The Keen Newport, Newport H2, Venice, Venice H2, Laguna, San Sebastian, Copper Canyon and Arroyo shoes all feature an adjustable bungee cord lacing system. The bungee lace system cinches securely over the top of the foot. We encourage you to try several pair to determine which works best for you.

Sizing:

Nobody knows your feet like you do. Take your fit history into consideration as a starting point when sizing your Keen shoes.

As a general rule, go up 1/2 size from your standard shoe size then work from there. A few more issues you may want to consider: Keen Sandals and Boots with the eVent or KEEN.DRY water resistant membrane tends to have less interior volume in the toe box area of the shoe, so sizing up to some extent is sometimes necessary. Also, if trying on Keen shoes in store, be aware of what time of the day you try them on - Later in the day is best since your feet tend to be at their widest.

Lastly, note that each style fits according to intended use. Keen Trail running and hiking styles have a more snug performance fit, whereas casual category styles built for urban trekking have a more accommodating fit and should not fit snugly.
